Xyratex expands on the flexibility and reliability of its SAS/SATA EBOD technology with the introduction of the 12 bay enclosure, to complement the 16 bay product, capable of supporting system performance and capacity with SAS and SATA II (3Gb) storage in a single enclosure.

Delivering a Highly Flexible Solution

As the demand for storage is ever increasing, so also are the requirements for reliability, availability and serviceability of data. The Xyratex RS-1220-E3-EBD delivers a highly flexible solution designed to address the requirements of these applications with the optimal blend of performance, reliability and cost in a single enclosure supporting an Expanded Bunch of Disks (EBOD).

The advanced Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) architecture of the RS-1220-E3-EBD eliminates the performance bottleneck associated with Parallel SCSI interface, resulting in a significant improvement in performance, scalability and system availability over legacy SCSI products. Through the use of serial interfaces and an integrated SAS expander, modules are capable of supporting SAS and Serial ATA (SATA) drives, combining the performance features of online SAS drives with the cost effectiveness of Nearline SATA drives on a common backplane in a single enclosure.

Assuring Robust Data Availability

The RS-1220-E3-EBD enables the customer to provide tiered storage solutions with either low cost SATA II (3Gb) drives or high performance SAS drives to optimize the storage “performance vs. cost” factor for their specific application. By utilizing this tiered storage model, the RS-1220-E3-EBD enables customers to support both mission critical primary data and archival data with one solution.

The Xyratex RS-1220 enclosures have 12 hot-swappable disk drives in just 2 standard units of rack space, industry-leading capacity in this form factor. Designed with hot-swappable controllers, power supplies, cooling modules and enclosure management functions, this fully-redundant enclosure is designed to meet the demands of 24/7 operation.

Xyratex’s StorView for JBOD software enables users to monitor and administer the enclosure and drives attached to a system. An optional upgrade to StorView Global Manager for JBOD enables customers to monitor and manage the enclosure from any location anywhere on the network.
