Video: John Fragalla Talks ClusterStor with Rich Brueckner

Rich Brueckner of InsideHPC recently sat down with John Fragalla, principal solutions architect at Xyratex, to discuss the value that ClusterStor brings to the HPC market, what Xyratex has learned from designing and deploying ClusterStor solutions and more.  Here is a video of their conversation:

The Phony War?

In the data storage world today, vendors are confusing users by a starting a phony war. The opening salvo of this battle starts off with a typical bold statement that hardware RAID is reliable and software RAID is not. But those of us in the business know that this is at best a naïve and ill-informed statement – or at its worst, it’s just an attempt to confuse customers. The difference is what can best be described as firmware versus software. Why?

Encouraging Young Women to Pursue Science Careers

In early March I had the pleasure of teaching a workshop at a technical careers event sponsored by Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a day-long event for young women designed to increase their interest in and awareness of mathematics, science and other traditionally male careers. The day also gave those students a chance to meet and form personal contacts with women working in those professions.

Question and Answer session with Vadim Perelman, new member of the Xyratex Board of Directors.

Question 1:

As a new board member, what is your vision for Xyratex?

Answer 1:

My vision is for Xyratex to be a leading provider of the highest quality, cost competitive storage solutions. I would like management to focus its efforts on driving profitable growth in support of our customers’ product pipelines. From my point of view, this entails deepening our relationships with existing partners and looking for opportunities to earn the business of new ones.

Xyratex at LUG 2013

It’s LUG time again! LUG ’13, organized by OpenSFS, is being held in sunny San Diego from April 16-18.

Xyratex is sponsoring LUG and has multiple presentation sessions that include some great information and updates for the community. Our presentation sessions include:

•April 16th :   9:20am -   9:30am – Xyratex Update

•April 16th : 11:00am - 11:20am - Software versus Hardware RAID and Implications for the Future

•April 16th :   1:00pm -   1:20pm - Lustre Contribution Model

Greetings from Canada!

LUG starts imminently, and I’ve been looking forward to visiting San Diego (one of my favourite U.S. cities) and seeing so many friends. Some personal issues have arisen (nothing too dire so no need to worry) that require me to stay behind here in Nova Scotia and prevent my traveling to San Diego for the event. Regretfully, this will be the first LUG I’ve had to miss since Hilton Head in 2006.

Large-Scale Storage Challenges in the Entertainment Industry

This year, Xyratex was invited to attend the Studio SysAdmin networking group meeting and contribute to a discussion of the media & entertainment industry’s (M&E) large-scale storage challenges. Studio SysAdmin is dedicated to improving infrastructure, workflows and support across the entertainment industry, and there were around 100 attendees – an elite group including big and small post-production studios, integrators, VARs and suppliers.

Hadoop Misconceptions – Part 2

The first post in this two-part series talked about two often-repeated misconceptions associated with Hadoop.  Here below, we outline two more that we feel are important to clear up for the benefit of the community.

Hadoop Misconceptions - Part 1

Hadoop is an extremely successful framework for running certain classes of large distributed compute jobs. Of course, no framework is perfect for every job, but Hadoop has attracted a large swath of Big Data computation users primarily, I believe, because of its ease of use. But there are oft-repeated mantras associated with Hadoop that gloss over some very significant gaps that you should know.
