Blade Systems Alliance Awards BladeS Demo System To US LABS

Leading User of Advanced Information Technology for Cancer Testing to Deploy Multi-Vendor Blade System for Critical Document Imaging Application

Storage World Conference, Long Beach, CA, June 30, 2004 – The Blade Systems Alliance (BladeS), the industry group committed to advancing the adoption of blade-based and modular computing systems, announced that it has awarded its first BladeS Demo System to US LABS, a leading national cancer diagnostics testing laboratory. US LABS was chosen to receive the BladeS Demo System because of its unique ability to evaluate and deploy blade systems in a state-of-the-art information technology environment.

US LABS is a national anatomic pathology reference laboratory devoted to comprehensive, high-quality, rapid-response cancer testing. US LABS provides diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive cancer testing services to hospitals, physician offices, surgery centers, and research institutions. US LABS will use the state-of-the-art blade system to power the document imaging systems that are critical to the company’s workflow environment. The BladeS Demo System is the first blade server environment to be deployed by US LABS.

“Blades promise to bring a whole new dimension to our data center,” said Michael Chapman, CIO of US LABS. “Blade systems combine fast interconnect speeds, space savings, reduced cabling and easy failover, enabling US LABS to advance our goal of using the best technology available in order to provide our clients with the best service possible.”

The BladeS Demo System awarded to US LABS consists of interoperable blade systems, storage and networking technologies, including:

  • Silicon Mechanics blade chassis with four Intel-based server blades with embedded Fibre Channel switches and HBAs
  • QLogic SANbox 5200 Stackable Switches
  • F5 Networks BIG-IP Blade Controller software
  • SharkRack 19-inch TigerShark rack
  • Apple Xserve RAID storage solution
  • nStor 4700 Fibre to SATA-RAID Storage Solution with StorView Management Software
  • Avocent KVM over IP switching system (DSR800) and DSView management software

“We are proud to award our first BladeS Demo System to US LABS, one of the world’s leading users of advanced information technology,” said Dennis Carlson, president of Blade Systems Alliance. “Blade systems are ideally well suited for critical workflow computing requirements in advanced IT environments, such as at US LABS, that require advanced and cost-effective capabilities application processing, load balancing, failover, remote management, racking, and power management.”

The BladeS Interop Demo was featured at Server Blade Summit 2004 and Storage Networking World Spring 2004, showcasing state-of-the-art blade server and storage systems from Blade Systems Alliance members including QLogic, F5 Networks, Apple, Avocent, nStor Corporation, SharkRack, Silicon Mechanics, XIOtech, and Unisys. A new BladeS Interop Demo is on display at this week’s Storage World Conference featuring Unisys, Kashya, XIOtech and SharkRack.
